Surprise from the past

After patches and more patches, major upgrades and even a new operating system, I have just realized that we still can’t create a folder called “AUX” in windows XPSP2. Well, actually, you can’t create a folder called CON, COM1, COM2, COM3, COM4, LPT1, LPT2, LPT3, PRN or  NUL either.

I wonder if they will fix it in Vista or if that will require Administrator Privileges, pass through six dialogs, a digitally signed certificate and a recommendation letter =))

  • If you want MS-DOS compatibility (and sadly, many people still does), that’s what you get. You can’t allow a program having a pipe to LPT1 and not know if it’s a file/directory or a parallel port :-)

No big surprises here… there are many (and way more important) things coming from the good old days still in XP (and which probably will be in Vista too).

  • Jcl, I know, but after they said that XP was a major upgrade and that it wouldn’t work anymore with msdos programs etc etc… why didn’t they fix that part too? :D

Liso: te dije que los carajillos de bon mati no eran buenos!

  • Sole, la verdad es que tienes razón, ayer sali un “poquito” y me he levantado con “la tajá” puesta ;)

  • sole: who said that? they actually said they improved ms-dos compatibility under XP (and they did), and they said it’d be even better in Vista.

It’s just that the OS doesn’t run -over- ms-dos (like 9x/Me did), but they never said ms-dos was going away.

  • (afaik :) )

  • Oh! then I just misunderstood it. so did they really say that ms dos was going to be still in Vista??
    i can’t believe it!!

  • Not ms-dos… ms-dos emulation (like in Windows XP). But since the filesystem is the same… I guess the device names for files and folders will still be limited to no AUX, LPTs or COMs :)

  • Viva Mac OS X :-9
