20060403 I know what killed the demoscene

Yes, I do! Really!
You know what?

MSN Messenger and other instant messaging applications + bored people = scene is dead.

I'm following iq's wise philosophy lately and I'm not connecting to MSN at all these days. Just checking the e-mail each 2 hours or more (if I remember to do so), and using my time more efficiently, without being annoyed by people which ignore the BUSY status, etc.

Also there's just approximately 11 days left to Breakpoint! Suddenly, good fortune came back to my life and I managed to compile my code in windows and run the demo I'm preparing for the party. Looks like it's going to bring loads of fun.

And now… back to xcode in a quiet, non-interrupted environment ;-)

20051207 Loving RoundCube

What's better than a Cube? A rounded cube!

After my I-hate-all-webmails post (sorry, in Spanish), I must recognize I have found one which is pretty decent (also very mac-ish): Round Cube.

It's still in alpha but works greatly and nicely, super ajax powered… and it's so clean…!

If you want to try it, use these installation instructions. Pretty straightforward.

A MUST have - I think it'll become the web2.0 webmail program ;-)

20051127 ipod utils

I have been testing a pair of ipod applications in my ipod mini, and here are the results of my tests!
First one was the iFeedPod. This one allows you to use the Notes function of the ipod as a RSS reader.

It still lacks a bit of user friendliness. For example, I tried to import my bloglines opml file and it didn't allow me to select the file (which was called export.xml) until I manually changed the extension to .opml. A bit stupid but hey it could have warned, or something like that.
Also, if one of the feeds does not load for whatever reason, it will stop and say that all the feeds have been synched (which is not true), so you will finish with an incomplete sync.
On the other hand, and although I am not sure if that's the program's fault, all the blogs hosted at blogspot do not show any other thing apart from "div".

This program has also invited me to unsuscribe from blogs which just show summaries and not the complete entries, by the way… How am I going to click on "read more" while I am several feet underground in my travel to work? bah…!

Finally I also tested goPod. This is also very useful for ipods bought in the European Union, as seems like Apple is forced to "cap" the maximum possible volume, to avoid people getting deaf by listening to very loud music. But maybe they didn't think of music which is recorded at a very low level or badly mastered. For these cases, this program changes a pair of bytes in the ipod firmware and allows you to listen at whatever volume you like, without any restriction.

20051015 Testing Camino

We all know that Firefox is great, but in mac it lacks a bit the Aqua look and feel. No problems! I have given a try to Camino, the optimized-for-mac firefox build. It is faster than the previous Firefox version I tested here, and FCKeditor works perfectly too, even Flash 8 plug-in and all of that. Also, it has the close tab icon in the same place as Safari… sounds nice!

I usually browse with Safari but for sites using FCKeditor (I post in my blog with it) I need to use a mozilla flavoured browser, as safari does still not support Rich Text Editing properly (if you are curious, the main problem is that safari does not allow to set the source of dynamically created/loaded scripts - which is the base for online text editors as FCKeditor. You can find more information here, on the fckeditor safari compatibility effort page). Unluckily, last version I tried (Deer Park - or 1.5 beta) broke FCKeditor support.

The only problem is that Camino does not seem to allow extensions, like Firefox does. Anyway, an interesting browser. I'll stay with usual firefox for using extensions… and this one for pages which require Rich Text Editing.
